1. Two Ph.D. Positions in Climate Change AI at Michigan Technological University

There are two Ph.D. positions with Dr. Tao Liu at Michigan Technological University. The student will use machine learning\deep learning methods with remote sensing data to solve problems relevant to climate change. Specifically, the student will choose one of the following three areas:

1. Phenotyping Individual Trees with Drone and Handheld Remote Sensing Systems

Utilize LiDAR data to map the individual trees in natural forests precisely.

Employ LiDAR data for detailed analysis of morphological traits at the individual tree level, including measurements of height, stem form, diameter at breast height (DBH), and leaf characteristics such as leaf area index (LAI), leaf area density (LAD), color, distribution, and angle, along with canopy features like volume, coverage, structure, and phenological aspects (e.g., flowering periods, leaf coloration timing, leaf expansion, and leaf fall).

Process optical remote sensing data to assess biochemical traits, including chlorophyll and lignin content, and water use efficiency at the individual tree level.

2. Forest Health Mapping and Understanding Mechanisms

Utilize aerial and satellite remote sensing platforms combined with deep learning techniques to conduct large-scale forest health mapping at the national level. Employ AI technologies for predicting forest health trends.

Investigate the influence of various factors on forest health, particularly the role of climate change, using AI technologies.

3. Wildfire Mapping and Forecasting

Integrate Sentinel and Landsat imagery to accurately identify the ignition points of wildfires. Integrate multiple data types using the Pytorch forecasting package to predict wildfire probabilities.

Qualifications:

  • U.S. citizens, nationals and permanent residents
  • MS or BS degree in environmental science, forestry, geography, computer science, data science, or other related fields.
  • Programming skills using Python.
  • Remote sensing research or image processing experience
  • Strong communication skills, both in terms of formal written reports/manuscripts and oral presentations.

Funding: The selected candidate will be funded with the NSF Research Traineeship program.

2. Ph.D. assistantship in Water Resources Engineering at the University of Kansas

Dynamic landscapes are a tapestry of hydrologic, environmental, and anthropogenic features that work in tandem to confer ecosystem benefits and provide for societal demands. Increasingly, these landscapes are at risk under the growing pressures of land use alteration and climate change. Understanding how landscapes dynamically connect the transfer of water, sediment, and nutrients is crucial if we are to sustainably manage our shared water resources. 

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering at the University of Kansas is pleased to announce the availability of a fully-funded PhD position supported by a National Science Foundation CAREER grant. The preferred start date for this assistantship is Summer/Fall 2024. Full consideration will be given to students applying by March 1st.

Research Skills and Areas

  • Large-scale water quality modeling, including deep learning and explainable artificial intelligence.
  • High-frequency aquatic sensing of water, sediment, carbon, and nitrogen 
  • Forecasting land use and climate change impacts on water quality.

Qualifications

3. Multiple Positions in Algal Ecology and Biotechnology at New Mexico State University

The lab is currently recruiting graduate students to start in August 2024 in the NMSU Biology Department. MS (2-3 years) and PhD students (5-6 years) who are interested in working on the major research themes of the lab, or who have questions that can be addressed using algae as a model system will be considered. 4. Two Funded M.S. Graduate Research Assistantships - Ecological Restoration: Tropical Bee Communities - Eastern Kentucky University

Graduate Opportunity (MS), Fall 2024

Department of Biology, Eastern Kentucky University

Position description: The Peters Lab at Eastern Kentucky University is seeking applicants for two funded MS student positions. The successful candidates will be carrying out field work in the Monteverde region of Costa Rica using 20 experimental plots planted within silvopastoral agroforestry systems to document and identify the community of native bees recovered by each restoration treatment. The student will develop plant-pollinator visitation networks detailing plant usage and contribute to the overall project goal of improving understanding of managing tropical landscapes for native bees and pollination services. The selected individuals are expected to take on a leadership role. This will include leading teams of Earthwatch participants in the field and communicating with landowners about the importance of the research and bee conservation. Numerous opportunities will exist for learning and developing scientific skills as well as taxonomy skills.

Qualifications: BS in entomology, biology, ecology, or a related field. Preference given to candidates who have skills in bee and/or pollinator biology, plant identification, and field work.

Professional expectations: The MS student will work at Eastern Kentucky University located in Richmond, KY, in the lab of Valerie Peters. Field work will take place in Costa Rica in June, July 2025 and December 2024 and 2025. During the appointment, candidates will travel to at least one scientific meeting. The PI will encourage professional development and creative and independent approaches to problem solving.

About the lab: My lab is broadly interested in creative solutions for mitigating the impacts of global change, focusing on the recovery and management of ecosystem services and their providers. The current focus of this work is on tropical native bees, pollination services, and agroforestry systems. 5. MS Position in Plant Conservation Genetics - University of Northern Colorado

The McGlaughlin Lab at the University of Northern Colorado is currently recruiting 1 Masters of Science student to conduct conservation genetic research on rare plants. The position will start in the summer or fall of 2024. Research in our lab is focused on using modern genetic tools to enhance the conservation and management of rare and endangered plants. Specifically, the selected student will use Restriction Associated DNA (RAD) sequencing to examine the taxonomic status, genetic/geographic structure, and genetic health of a focal plant. Our lab works very closely with federal land management agencies (Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, and US Fish and Wildlife Service) to support preservation of native plant diversity. Any student joining the lab will be involved in long-term demographic monitoring of rare and endangered plants in addition to their genetic research. We have multiple new projects beginning in the summer of 2024, with potential projects focused on Penstemon, Astragalus, and Potentilla. Although prior experience with genetic data collection is beneficial, the primary qualification for this position is a passion for plants and conservation, and a willingness to learn. Applicants should have as BS/BA in Botany, Biology, Ecology or related field with an undergraduate GPA >3.0. Formal applicants are required to submit undergraduate transcripts, a letter of intent/interest, CV, and three letters of recommendation through the UNC application system.

The selected student will be supported by a mix of grant funded research assistantships, UNC herbarium research assistantships, and graduate teaching assistantships. The selected student will receive an academic year living stipend, a tuition waiver, and summer funding support. Students need to be legal US residents, capable of establishing residency in Colorado within 1 year of beginning the program. Students will ideally start in May or June 2024 in order to allow for participation in summer fieldwork. For full consideration for funding applications to UNC need to be submitted by March 15, 2024.

6. M.S. Graduate Position in Turtle Conservation - Penn State

Job Title: M.S. Graduate Position in Turtle Conservation

Description:

We are seeking a qualified Master's student to coordinate and develop a comprehensive survey of freshwater turtle fauna in the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River (UPDE) and Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DEWA) to understand the distribution and relative abundance of turtle species in the river, inform our understanding of human impacts and recreational risks to turtle populations, and provide data to park managers that enables the effective management of species of conservation concern.

The student will perform field work and quantitative analysis to:

  1. Determine which species are present in the Delaware River system within each NPS unit, including where species of conservation concern occur.
  2. Determine how species�€™ distributions change in relation to important habitat covariates including human recreation levels and the presence of non-native species.
  3. Identify risk factors for turtle populations and identify riparian areas where human activity puts turtles at risk.

This project is a collaboration between the National Park Service and Pennsylvania State University. The student will be co-advised by Drs. Julian Avery and Franny Buderman.

The graduate student will receive a stipend of ~$30,000/year. Medical insurance and tuition are also provided.

Required Qualifications:

  1. B.S. degree in wildlife ecology, biology, or related field
  2. Strong oral and written communication skills
  3. Demonstrated diligence and strong work ethic
  4. Driver's license and ability to conduct independent field work in challenging conditions.

Preferred Qualifications may include:

Opportunity for an MS or PhD Research Assistantship position in the Wildland Resources Department, Utah State University, to participate in a National Science Foundation-funded project entitled �€Å“Indigenous forest management in a non-stationary climate.

Position: Research Assistantship with at least three years of funding. This student will work with Dr. DeRose (https://lnkd.in/gd2MF4eA) and closely with Dr. Kevin Anchukaitis (https://lnkd.in/gY29n2vq), will be involved in all aspects of the research, and will lead a focus on the forest assessment, dendrochronological reconstruction of disturbance regimes and their cause and consequences with respect to climate and management. Research will include incorporation of Indigenous Knowledge, and integration with other project graduate students that are studying cultural and ethnographic aspects. The research will involve working in Guatemalan forests with few foot paths and where steep slopes prevail. Dr. DeRose is a part of the Wildland Resources Department (WILD), made up of 30 full-time faculty. 9. Two M.S. Graduate Research Assistantships - Nutrient Dynamics in Water and Soil - Southern Illinois University

The SIUC Watershed Science team has two 2-year graduate research assistantships available in the School of Forestry and Horticulture at Southern Illinois University (forestry.siu.edu). Students with an interest in water, soils, and/or nutrient dynamics in agricultural watersheds are encouraged to apply. Our research focuses on nutrient dynamics, especially phosphorus, and seeks to understand how phosphorus and other nutrients are moving through watersheds. One project will focus on quantifying phosphorus and sediment contribution from streambank erosion in two Illinois watersheds. Cross-sectional surveys, drone flights, and erosion pins will be used to determine the contribution of erosion to phosphorus to the stream water. The second project will focus on the performance of agricultural best management practices, specifically water and sediment control basins (WASCoBs). The WASCoB project seeks to quantify their trapping efficiency for nutrients and sediment carried via water, and those deposited in the sediments. Drone imagery, feldspar clay pads, and automated water samplers will be used in the research.

A successful candidate will be self-motivated and able to work independently and as part of team, have strong analytical and communication skills, basic knowledge of GIS, and be able to work in a variety of weather conditions. A background in forestry, soils or hydrology, natural resource management, environmental science, agricultural management, or closely related field is preferred. Candidates must have a U.S. driver's license. Positions will begin during the summer or fall semester of 2024.

11. Ph.D Student - Department of Environmental Engineering Services - University of Florida in Gainesville, FL

I am looking for a creative and self-motivated Ph.D. student to join the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, starting FALL of 2024. The project will focus on the application of machine learning techniques to advance the data-driven design of nanomaterials, with a particular focus on graphene, as part of a recently funded NSF CAREER. The students will leverage these techniques to create structured databases on graphene and use them to find useful correlations between synthesis conditions and output properties of the material.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor's OR Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, data science, mathematics, statistics, econometrics, economics, operations research, or related field. Desired skills:
